INTRODUCTION TO MIATA EXHAUSTS
Once upon a time we had a choice of chambered versus straight through Miata exhaust designs and there was much to consider. But all the popular choices today are straight through smooth perforated core designs to maximize power gains and the choice among these now comes down to YOUR personal preference in sound level.
In general, the Racing Beat brand is the most conservative and quiet, our own RoadsterSport brand miata exhaust choices are the next step up in volume, and the Borla Miata single and Borla Miata Dual exhaust are the more loud and raspy choices.

THE ROADSTERSPORT 3 Miata Exhaust, Development and Testing.
For 1990 to 1997 Miatas my personal choice is the RoadsterSport 3. I am admittedly biased, because this is my design after messing around with the Miata for 20 years. We went through several prior versions over a decade including a "RoadsterSport Race", RoadsterSport I and RoadsterSport II...before we combined everything we learned into this latest 'RoadsterSport 3'. Special features include the V clamp connection between midpipe and muffler (saves weight with no big heavy and thick bolt flanges, and with no gasket to wear out and leak it saves long term headaches too!). We spent a lot of DYNO time on this one (notice how SMOOTH those bends are...that maximizes power). The complete discussion on the dyno can be found in our forum posting.
Gain is 5 to 6 hp across a good range. Peak stock HP on our 97 on this dyno was 119 and with the exhaust it went up to 124. Peak torque went from 106 to 110 Ft/lbs. But the point of posting the chart was to show that the total area under the curve is quite nice...not just gains in the upper RPMS. Our previous generation exhaust used larger tube size for a little more peak gain but our dyno work taught us that the 2.25 inch size gave us more total area under the curve....which may not sound as good for advertising claims but actually makes for a much faster Miata.
